The First-Ever “Caesars Cup” has just concluded the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe.

.

Caesars Cup.  Players on both teams --" Europe versus The Americas "-- played a series of heads-up matches to determine the winning team, and guess who won, the Europe team led by the cute, young Team Captain, Annette Obrestad. She selected who she thought were the best European players, and as you can see, she was right.

The European Team members were, Team Captain Annete Obrestad, Peter Eastgate, Dario Minieri, Bertrand "Elky" Grospelier, Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen & the Betfair Qualifier, John Harvey.

The European Team, aside from being much younger than the Americas Team, were far more accomplished in online poker than live tournaments. The average age of the European team was 15 years less than the Americas Team and their combined total winnings is more than $23 Million.

It will be interesting watching Annette Obrestad when she turns 21 and moves to Vegas as planned. She's already playing and beating some of the best players in the world and she's not even 21 yet. Watch out guys!!

Team Americas Team Captain was everyone's favorite player on late night poker, Daniel Negreanu. He selected the very respected Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, known as the Poker Bratt, Phil Ivey, Huck Seed, John Juanda, Jennifer Harman and Barry Greenstein.

The members of Team Europe were jubilant afterward, in contrast to Team America, which was visibly shocked and disappointed.  The visitors were not only dissatisfied with the results.  They were stunned by the lopsided score and relative ease by which the Europeans achieved their victory.    It’s not just an American game anymore.

      2009 Caesars Cup --

Daniel Negreanu stated:  “My view of the Caesars Cup is similar to what is going on in golf with the Ryder Cup.  There are players representing their country on each team.  And that helps to create a very special event that people will care about.  So far, it has gone that way.  Everybody is really into it.  It is lots of fun.  The format and matchups are great.  I mean, Huck Seed and Phil Hellmuth on the same side?  That’s exciting for me to watch.  As for being the captain, it’s fun for me.  I do not look at it anything other than they will all look to me as someone to be the glue that can hold it all together and be the strategist, which is what I love to do.  I am really honored to be the Team Captain, for sure.”

Annette Obrestad stated:  “I think the Caesars Cup is a really cool concept.  It is something that has never been done before.  I hope the Caesars Cup goes on for every year, from now on.  It’s really cool to be the Team Captain of Team Europe and I hope that since I got this chance I can do my team a lot of good and lead us to victory."

The members of Team Europe were jubilant afterward, in contrast to Team America, which was visibly shocked and disappointed.  The visitors were not only dissatisfied with the results.  They were stunned by the lopsided score and relative ease by which the Europeans achieved their victory.

The event was filmed entirely by Poker Productions.  The two-hour program will air on ESPN in North America and ESPN International elsewhere.  The first broadcast date is expected to be 7 February 2010.  The show will be a two-hour broadcast.

Positive Expectations

Poker is all about positive expectations. By this we don't so much means hoping to win or even expecting to win; but having expectations of winning by only playing such cards at such times that in the long run this play will yield a profit (Positive Expectation).

Unless you have an over riding reason to make a play that you don't think will win for you in the long run, just don't do it. One over riding reason might be a bluff that sets up your opponent for a later profit.

Without such a reason, making plays that have long run negative expectation will do just that for you... Lose Your Money for you.

.

Starting as a Pro

Many people outside the poker community think that most poker pros somehow start playing poker and next thing they are automatically elevated to playing with Gus Hansen and Doyle Brunson at the final table on TV at the WPT or WSOP.

The reality of the life of a poker pro is much different as most Poker Pros start out very humbly by grinding out a living and building a bankroll at very low limit poker, usually 2-4, 3-6, or 4-8 then elevating to the 10/20 and 20/40 level which allows them to build a bankroll much faster as more than their basic living expenses are quickly covered leaving them extra cash. Others are fortunate enough to be able to begin their play at the 10-20 and above and then elevate.

It should be noted that not all poker pros elevate to the highest levels of poker, as many find a level of play that they excel at and brings them sufficient income for them to live well.

So, as you begin your poker profession, it is good to realize that there is no one way to approach this profession; whatever works for you, works for you.

PRO POINT SYSTEM

__________________________________

The Pro Point System is the foundation of the Poker-Pro Game strategy and it is essential that you have a thorough understanding of the point system before beginning subsequent research chapters. We recommend that you memorize all point values and practise them with sample card hands until the point values become automatic for you.

The Poker-Pro Point system was developed by Poker-Pro for our members in order to quickly and accurately evaluate Poker hands. More importantly, to our knowledge it is the only system which automatically adjusts for the number of players in the game. This is particularly important for games with less than a full table (Shorthanded Games), one of the most profitable, but least understood Poker situations.

While most Poker players intrinsically understand that each card has a relative numerical value, an Ace is worth more than a King for example and that suited cards are worth more than unsuited cards, until the development of the Poker Pro Point System, there was no scientific way to evaluate exactly how much each card or combination of cards were worth or when to play them.

Most professional players today recognize that in order to maintain a decent living standard as a pro, it is important to continually refine playing skills and take advantage of every mathematical advantage available. With this in mind we are pleased to present The Poker Pro Point System.

POKER PRO POINT SYSTEM

With the point system we assign each card a specific relative value or points. As expected, the Ace receives the highest value; however, you will note that cards rankings from 8 down receive no value, unless paired, connected or suited.

For learning purposes, we are using Texas Hold'em Poker game primarily because it is currently the leading money game both for tournaments and live play and it the easiest to use to demonstrate the point system, as only two cards are dealt each player initially. Naturally we will cover the use of the Point System in other primary poker games in later research chapters.

Individual Card Point Values:

  • A= 6 points
  • K= 5 points
  • Q= 4 points
  • J = 3 points
  • 10=2 points
  • 9 = 1 points
  • 8 = 0 points
  • 7 = 0 points
  • 6 = 0 points
  • 5 = 0 points
  • 4 = 0 points
  • 3 = 0 points
  • 2 = 0 points

Pairs receive an extra value of 8 points.

Suited cards receive an extra value of 3 points.

Connected cards receive an extra value of 2 points.

Suited cards are written with a small "s" as: KJ's

Connected cards refers to directly adjacent cards such as: KQ or AK or KQ or QJ, not KJ or AQ.

Examples of values of first two cards dealt in Texas Hold'em:

  • AA=20 points (6 points for each ace plus 8 points for a pair)
  • KK=18 points (5 points for each king plus 8 points for a pair)
  • QQ=16 points (4 points for each queen plus 8 points for a pair)
  • AK's=16 points (6 points for the ace, 5 points for the king plus 3 points for being suited and 2 points for being connected)
  • JJ=14 points (3 points for each jack plus 8 points for a pair)
  • KQ's=14 points (5 points for the king, 4 points for the queen plus 3 points for being suited and 2 points for being connected)
  • AK=13 points (6 points for the ace, 5 points for the king plus 2 points for being connected)
  • AQ's=13 points (6 points for the ace, 4 points for the queen plus 3 points for being suited)
  • T,T=12 points (2 points for each ten plus 8 points for a pair)
  • AJ's=12 points (6 points for the ace, 3 points for the jack plus 3 points for being suited)
  • AT's=11 points (6 points for the ace, 2 points for the ten plus 3 points for being suited)
  • KJ's=11 points (5 points for the king, 3 points for the jack plus 3 points for being suited)
  • KQ=11 points (5 points for the king, 4 points for the queen plus 2 points for being connected)
  • 9,9=10 points (1 point for each 9 plus 8 points for a pair)
  • AQ=10 points (6 points for the ace, 4 points for the queen)

It is interesting to note the value difference of 3 points between AQ's and AQ. This demonstrates the importance of suiting and is helpful in evaluating the correct value of a AQ starting hand. Suited it is definitely playable while unsuited it can be a marginal hand often played for more than it's worth.
